“What Really Makes You Tick?” 10 questions you should ask of yourself: A Preparation To Self-Development.

1. What do I really want?

The age old question. So many things you want to do with your life and so little time to even go about getting them done.

You can’t just do something that you are good at, you must be passionate about it as well. When you are doing something you truly enjoy doing, you will naturally be better at doing whatever that is. It might help trying to realize that in small steps first, leading towards broader steps of improvement. The key here is to add a dash of diligence towards achieving your desires.

2. Should I really change or improve?

I guess the better question would be, why shouldn’t you change and improve?

If history has taught us anything, it’s that life changes with time, even during those times when it seems that nothing has changed.

What changes is how we perceive the tried and true or the improvements. Try to see if partying 70’s style wouldn’t appeal to the younger generation. And dancing, another example of change without change. The difference is in the improvement.

3. What’s the bright side in all of this?

With so much devastation happening around us, we might sometimes think there will never be that light at the end of the tunnel. But, it’s during these very times that we learn how generous we can be. We can still see it as something positive without undergoing so much scrutiny. And if it’s a train at the end of the tunnel, take it for a ride and see what makes the world go round! How you choose to see life is your choice. Look for the bright side.

Remember, you will always find what you expect. When you expect the negative, it is what you will find. The only way to find the positive, is to actively seek it out and have that expectation as the end result.

4. Am I comfortable with what I’m doing?

There’s always the option of doing things the right way, when it seems too difficult a task to conquer. While you might also find an easy way to handle the same situation, over the long run, you might find your easy cure to be your very undoing.

If you suffer guilt due to your decision, maybe you need to take a second look. When you place yourself on the receiving end first, the pictures becomes one that is much clearer. It doesn’t take a genius to realize whether they would desire someone else to treat them in the same manner, but a person willing enough to answer this question with honesty is simply genuinely genius. See yourself as the other person and if you are pleased by your actions, everybody wins.

5. Have I done enough for myself?

Is there something more you want to do? Of course there is. Discontentment in any aspect can be dangerous in large doses, but in small amounts you’ll be able to see and do stuff you could never imagine doing else-wise. So take baby steps at first, set goals along the way that lead to progress. Sometimes you will find, doing more for others actually does more good for your own spirit too.

6. Am I happy at where I am today?

It’s an unfair question so let it be an answer! You love being a good and loving person, so why not take it up a notch or two! Being happy and being happy with were you are in life aren’t always the same thing. The same can be said for anyone in life! While we should always be grateful for what we have, a desire to improve upon the happiness in our lives is always a positive thing. On the other hand, if you aren’t happy about your life or where your life is going, it’s time to step up to the plate and change your life. Life is too short to spend it unhappy.

7. Am I appealing to the opposite sex?

So maybe I don’t have an answer to that, but that doesn’t mean I can’t try it, right? Whether you shape-up, change the way you wear your clothes or hair, or even your attitude towards people, you should always remember it will always be for your own benefit. Until you are able to view yourself as appealing, the opposite sex isn’t very likely to view you as appealing.

8. How much could I have?

Maybe the best question is, how much do you really need? Having lots of money and nice possessions is great, there’s no denying that, but if your desires border on greed, you might find yourself with less of what counts most - self respect!

Those who are blessed enough to find themselves in a financially secure position in life, will always tell you - they try to give back, in good turn. Remember you must improve the society that surrounds you, if you hope to achieve better surroundings. It’s a rhetorical thing. And more important, it’s not always about financial wealth. The best wealth you can offer the world and your loved ones is your character. No amount of money can buy quality character - or the love of another human being.

9. What motivates me?

What motivates you? It’s an answer you have to find out for yourself. There are so many different things that can motivate an individual. What works for one person, might not necessarily work for another. But, if it inspires you, encourages you, or energizes you - chances are - that is your best motivation. Think of life as a super buffet, sampling a little of everything. Eventually, even the pickiest of persons will find something that suits their taste buds.

10. What Really Makes You Tick?

Once you have the answer to the first nine questions, you will have a great indication as to what really makes you tick. You can be just about anything you want to be, but to realize that attaining something difficult is to realize what really makes you tick is the beginning of a wonderful journey. Always remember, that self-development is not just about the physical or philosophical change you have to undergo, but it’s something that you really desire to accomplish.

Everyone loves beach holidays! And with spring break upon us, many families will be headed to the beach this year, after such a cold hard winter. The little ones can dig in the sand and splash in the lapping waves. The adults can swim, get a tan, or just relax.  The inquisitive types can explore for sea life, tide pools, and drift wood.  The warm breezes and natural beauty are invigorating and restorative.  Any trip, however, can cause discomfort if you do not plan well.  Here are things you can do to make your beach holidays easier, safer, and more meaningful.

In many parts of the world, people head for their beach holidays in the family car. When planning a trip, it’s always a good idea to give the car a good cleaning out first. This will give you more room for your luggage. Stock you glovebox, too, with a few first aid and comfort items, such as sunblock, acetominiphen for headaches, a roll of antacids, a few cough drops, and a few bandaids.  Don’t forget a couple of scrunchies or pony-tailers for long hair.

Get the tires checked and replace any that are likely to go flat.  Get an oil change if it’s getting close.  Road trips are not much fun when they include breakdowns.  And whatever you do, make sure you have a map and a place to keep it handy.

Travelling with kids is always a challenge.  They may be particularly excited and impatient when they know they are going on beach holidays.  Make sure they have cool water bottles and healthy snacks to munch.  Try a simple car game to make the time pass.  Many kids like looking for letters of the alphabet on signs.  If several people get involved it can be quite fun.

With beach holidays particularly, there is always a need to provide for skin safety.  Be particularly careful about being in the sun for long stretches of time between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Use a sunblock with a high SPF rating and replace it after getting wet or drying off with your towel.  The towel you choose can make a difference too.  Thick towels get heavy and tend to trap a lot of sand.  You may find you like thin towels at the beach.  Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and some sort of foot protection to keep your feet from being burned on the hot sand.

With a little preparation your beach holidays can be enjoyable and problem-free.  When you arrive home you will be relaxed, refreshed, and ready for work. Take a minute to unpack and get your laundry going.  It won’t belong until the kids will be shouting, “When can we go on beach holidays again?”

There are a few different things that any good landscaping plan will need to be successful. First you should know what a successful landscaping plan is.

To be successful a landscaping plan needs to be well thought out and all issues must be dealt with and accounted for. This means taking into consideration the amount of sun each area of the yard will get as well as how much water it will receive and where the water will sit. Drainage is imperative to any well thought out landscaping plan. You need to have the right kind of irrigation if you want anything to grow and flourish in your landscaping plan.

You should take close stock of what is already around before you start any kind of landscaping plan. All of the best ones will use the natural beauties that are already a part of any yard. Most yards will have something going for them so find this and use it to make your landscaping plan stunning. For example there may be some gorgeous flowers or trees, or some great rock formations. Why rip these out only to plant something else? Make use of what is already there and your landscaping plan will look that much more natural and gorgeous.

Examine all aspects of the yard to be landscaped. Will you need to level or hill up any areas? Are the angles good as they are or do they need a little help? These kinds of things matter and will have some part of the drainage aspect mentioned above when it comes to your landscaping plan.

Most people do not have a large budget to spend, so you need to know how much you will be able to spend before you go all out designing this amazing, yet expensive landscaping plan. Try to use a design that takes advantage of your yard’s best aspects. And remember to shop around, ask experts and know what your options are.

Home landscaping is no different than any other kind of landscaping. It is natural for people to want their home to look as fabulous as it possibly can, who does not want the kind of yard that the whole neighborhood is envious of?

And the beauty of home landscaping is that it does not have to be hard and you can do most of it yourself. All it takes is a little elbow grease and some time to spare and you can design your own home landscaping quickly and easily.

There are even software products on the market that will help you to find the best home landscaping idea out there. These programs can be a great help to you as you are trying to figure out what will suit your home and yard the best. With these types of programs you will get to see a few different layouts and options are always good when trying to narrow down your choices.

If home landscaping software programs are not for you, then you can try doing a search online for some wonderful home landscaping ideas. The Internet is full of great sites that you can use to get everything done the right way. It is important to do plenty of research before you start your own home landscaping so that you keep the number of mistakes made down to a minimum. If you do make a boo-boo, don’t worry about it, anything can be fixed.

Before you start your home landscaping you will need to verify where any gas lines and electrical lines may be running through your yard. This is very important if your plan involves any digging. You cannot afford to hit any of these things, not only can it cost you a bundle to fix, it can also be very dangerous. Hitting an electrical line with a metal shovel could put an end to all of your work, your life too.

You will also need to find out about zoning restrictions that could affect your home landscaping. In some places you cannot have trees too high and even some fences are not allowed. Find out these kinds of things before you start your home landscaping work and you could save a lot of time and money.

By trying your own hand at landscaping your yard, not only are you beautifying your yard’s appearance and possibly increasing the value of your home, it’s also great exercise and a wonderful way to spend time with family and friends.

Impossible is Just a Word

Everyone, at some point of his or her life, has dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big. Who hasn’t fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? Who hasn’t dreamed of being the homecoming queen? And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships?

Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that – dreams. And our aspirations easily collect dust in our attic.

This is a sad turn of events in our life. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing.

But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher.

The most common problem to setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can’t do this. It’s too hard. It’s too impossible. No one can do this.

However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment.

Remember that scientists were baffled when they took a look at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, they said, it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Fortunately for the bumble bee no one has told it so. So fly it does.

On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’. Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’ And under one more, list the things that that are ‘impossible for you to do.’

Now look at all the headers strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under things ‘you know you can do’. Check them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header-the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’

As of the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are ‘impossible for you to do’ to the list of things ‘you might be able to do.’

As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic.

Those who just dream towards a goal without working hard end up disappointed and disillusioned.

On the other hand, if you told someone a hundred years ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from one side of the world to the other a few seconds, they would have said you were out of your mind. But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities.

So dream on, friend! Don’t get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you will just about find out that the impossible has just become a little bit more possible.

Most companies publish their annual reports for disclosure, but the details of how those ‘final’ calculations are derived, are closely guarded by many companies.

Business Financial Records are shared with four direct groups of people, but they might also be shared with various other outside interests:

  • the people who manage a business
  • the financial consultants and advisers*
  • the external people who have a direct financial interest to a business
  • the people and organizations that have an indirect effect on a business

The people, who make the decisions or recommendations concerning a company’s finances, make it based on three main categories: [This applies to non profit organizations as well]

*Are among both direct and indirect interests or effects

Management refers to the group of people who are in charge of operating a business and suggesting changes to improve the profitability and liquidity goals. If a business is extremely large, then the management will most often require more than one person or group of people.

Managers need to be able to answer important questions: Whether the company’s meeting its goals and projections, or whether there is need for adjustments. They must know if they have a profitable rate of return, whether the company has enough assets, which products bring in the most money, to name a few.  When making a decision, managers usually follow a systematic approach. Even though larger businesses require a more concrete analysis, they follow a similar pattern to small businesses.

External people with a direct interest are either Investors or Creditors.

Investors are the individuals that invest in a business and will keep a part of the ownership, also known as shareholders. They are concerned with the success and failure of the company, both past and present. They will also want to know the potential for earnings in the future, in addition to any risks involved. A concrete analysis of the financial statement will help prospective investors make those decisions.

Creditors are the companies that lend money to businesses for short or long term needs. Some examples of creditors are banks, mortgage companies, and insurance companies. Their main concern is whether a business will have the money to repay the loan, with interest. Some of the things they study before they make their decisions are a company’s liquidity, cash flow, and profitability.

External groups and organizations with an indirect interest are usually either industry related or governmental.

Industry

Some industry groups, such as labor unions analyze the financial statements of corporations to help negotiate a contact. The income of a company plays a major role in forming these contracts. The individuals who give advice to investors and creditors such as brokers and financial analysts have an indirect financial interest in a business. The amount of interest in the financial health of corporations has been growing by consumer groups such as customers and the public. They are also concerned about how the corporation will affect the social patterns of the environment and of the people that reside in that area.

Regulatory

Most companies generally have to report to one or more regulating agencies in the United States All corporations must answer to the Securities and Exchange Commission or SEC(To find out more information visit there website at http://www.sec.gov/). This is set up by the government to insure and protect the public by regulating the buying and selling of stocks. Companies that are listed on the Stock exchange must adhere to the rules and regulations.

Revenue

According to the rules and regulations of federal, state, or even local laws, individuals and companies are required to pay a variety of taxes. These include but are not limited to, sales tax, excise tax, social security tax, federal, state, payroll, and city income taxes. Each tax requires there own rules and regulations which can be very confusing at times. Reporting your taxes is a law and a very meticulous and tedious process. For example, The Internal Revenue Code contains over a thousand rules for delivering accounting information in federal income taxes.

Do you have leadership qualities? Maybe you have even asked yourself that question.

When you are at work, do you get frustrated because things don’t seem to be happening the way they’re supposed to be? You see people milling around but nothing gets accomplished. And in the daily hustle and bustle, do you feel that your goals remain just that – goals. Then maybe its time for you to stand up and do something about it.

Most people are content just to stand around listening for orders. And it isn’t unusual to adopt a follow-the-leader mentality. But maybe, somewhere inside of you, you feel the desire to make things happen – to be the head, not the tail. Then maybe leadership just suits you fine.

Some people believe that great leaders are made, not born. Yes, it may be true that some people are born with natural talents. However, without practice, without drive, without enthusiasm, and without experience, there can be no true development in leadership.

You must also remember that good leaders are continually working and studying to improve their natural skills. This takes a commitment to constantly improve in whatever endeavor a person chooses. To be a leader, one must be able to influence others to accomplish a goal, or an objective. A leader contributes to the organization and cohesion of a group.

Contrary to what most people believe, leadership is not about power. It is not about harassing people or driving them using fear. It is about encouraging others towards the goal of the organization. It is putting everyone on the same page and helping them see the big picture of the organization. You must be a leader, not just their boss.

People follow others when they see a clear sense of purpose. People will only follow you if they see that you know where you are going. Remember that bumper sticker? The one that says, don’t follow me, I’m lost too? The same holds true for leadership. If you, yourself, do not know where you’re headed, chances are people will not follow you at all.

You must know the vision of the organization. Having a clear sense of hierarchy, knowing who the bosses are, who to talk to, the organization’s goals and objectives; and how the organization works is the only way to show others you know what you are doing.

Being a leader is not about what you make others do. It’s about who you are, what you know, and what you do. You are a reflection of what you’re subordinates must be.

Good leadership instills trust and confidence in your subordinates. If they trust you they will go through hell and high water for you and for the organization. That trust and confidence is built on good relationships, trustworthiness, and high ethics.

The way you deal with your people and the relationships you build, will lay the foundation for the strength of your group. Once you earn their trust and confidence, you may proceed to communicate the goals and objectives your group must undertake.

Communication is a very important key to good leadership. Without this you can not be a good leader. The knowledge and technical expertise you have must be clearly conveyed to other people.

Every great leader also has good judgment. You must be able to assess situations, weigh the pros and cons of any decision, and actively seek the most sound solution. It is this judgment that your subordinates will come to rely upon. Therefore, good decision-making is vital to the success of your organization.

Leaders are not do-it-all heroes. They should not claim to know everything, nor should their subordinates rely upon the team leaders’ skills alone. Good leaders recognize, and take advantage of, the skills and talents of their subordinates. Only when you come to this realization will you be able to work as one cohesive unit.

If you possess leadership qualities, then you must ask yourself: Do you have the drive and the desire required of leaders?

To every problem, there is a solution. Some might require an adventure in Creative Thinking though.

How many times have you caught yourself saying, “there’s just no other solution to this problem” – and that the problem leads to a dead end? How many times have you felt stumped from this way of thinking?  No options.  No solutions.

Did it feel like you had exhausted all possible options, yet still stood before the mountain – large, unconquerable, and impregnable? When encountering such enormous problems, you may feel like you’re hammering against a steel mountain. The pressure of having to solve such a problem may be overwhelming.

But rejoice! There might be some hope yet!

With some creative problem-solving techniques you may be able to look at your problem in a different light. And that light might just be the end of the tunnel that leads to possible solutions.

First of all, in the light of creative problem-solving, you must be open-minded to the fact that there may be more than one solution to the problem. And, you must be open to the fact that there may be several solutions to problems you thought were unsolvable.

Now, with this optimistic mindset, we can try to be a little bit more creative in solving our problems.

Maybe the reason we cannot solve our problems is that we have not really taken a hard look at what the problem is. Trying to understanding the problem and having a concrete understanding of its workings is integral in solving the problem. If you know how it works, what the problem is, then you have a better foundation towards solving the problem.

Try to identify the participating entities and what their relationships with one another are. Take note of the things you stand to gain and stand to lose from the current problem. Now you have a simple statement of what the problem is.

Try to take note of all of the constraints and assumptions you have the words of problem. Sometimes it is these assumptions that obstruct our view of possible solutions. You have to identify which assumptions are valid, in which assumptions need to be addressed.

Try to solve the problem in parts. Solve it going from general view towards the more detailed parts of the problem. This is called the top-down approach. Write down the question, and then come up with a one-sentence solution to that from them. The solution should be a general statement of what will solve the problem. From here you can develop the solution further, and increase its complexity little by little.

Although it helps to have critical thinking aboard as you solve a problem, you must also keep a creative, analytical voice at the back of your mind. When someone comes up with a prospective solution, try to think how you could make that solution work. Try to be creative. At the same time, look for chinks in the armor of that solution.

It pays to remember that there may be more than just one solution at a time. Try to keep track of all the solutions and their developments. Remember, there may be more than just one solution to the problem.

Remember that old adage,” two heads are better than one.” That one is truer than it sounds. Always be open to new ideas. You can only benefit from listening to all the ideas each person has. This is especially true when the person you’re talking to has had experience solving problems similar to yours. Not all ideas might align with your needs, but you never know, until you have listened.

You don’t have to be a gung-ho, solo hero to solve the problem. If you can organize collective thought on the subject, it would be much better.

Be patient. As long as you persevere, there is always a chance that a solution will present itself. Remember that no one was able to create an invention the first time around.

Creative thinking exercises can also help you in your quest be a more creative problems solver.

Here is one example:

Take a piece of paper and write any word that comes to mind at the center. Now look at that word then write the first two words that come to your mind. This can go on until you can build a tree of related words. This helps you build analogical skills, and fortify your creative processes.

So, next time you see a problem you think you can not solve, think again. The solution might just be staring you in the face. All it takes is a little creative thinking, some planning, and some perseverance.
